President Bush has allowed himself to get into a quagmire and its entirely his fault. He could have on 9/21 when he gave perhaps one of the finest speeches ever given by a US President went just a bit further and demanded, in the same tone, perhaps using the same words that FDR used: I call upon all the loyal citizens engaged in production for defense to give precedence to the needs of the nation to the end that a system of government that makes private enterprise possible may survive.
I call upon all our loyal workmen as well as employers to merge their lesser differences in the larger effort to insure the survival of the only kind of government which recognizes the rights of labor or of capital.
I call upon loyal state and local leaders and officials to cooperate with the civilian defense agencies of the United States to assure our internal security against foreign directed subversion and to put every community in order for maximum productive effort and minimum of waste and unnecessary frictions.
I call upon all loyal citizens to place the nation's needs first in mind and in action to the end that we may mobilize and have ready for instant defensive use all of the physical powers, all of the moral strength and all of the material resources of this nation.
These words work fairly well also:
No tender whisperings of appeasers that Hitler is not interested in the Western Hemisphere, no soporific lullabies that a wide ocean protects us from him -- can long have any effect on the hard-headed, far-sighted, and realistic American people.
Those words so unfashionable these days would have been a pre-emptive attack on those who now, through cowardice or a sheer desire to see us lose, seek every means possible to cause us to lose this battle. Notice how many times that President Roosevelt uses the word Loyal. Notice how many times anyone uses that word these days? Yup not ever because now its fashionable to be disloyal.
We need the President to stand up and declare that yes indeed those who are hurting our soldiers and our leaders in this time of war are indeed disloyal. May be extremely unfashionable but its true. Let them answer for their crimes. Karl Rove's speech was a terrific first step but the President is the one who must carry the bulk of the burden for it to reach the citizens.
I will close with a call to arms to those who love this country. This is from another post of mine.
We deserve righteous anger, our war demands righteous anger and the words that righteous anger produce furthermore our righteous anger should brook no traitors or near traitors in our midst. President Bush has been an answer to our prayers in regards to taking the right actions. Now to continue to lead this war in the only fashion that will lead to victory he must find the words to uphold his revolutionary actions. Should he fail our will to prosecute this war will continue to diminish until we look in the mirror one day to see a Paper Tiger staring back at us.
Our enemy waits for our failure.
