- A Common Man Looks at the War on Islamic Terror -

Freedom and fear are at war.
The advance of human freedom the great achievement of
our time, and the great hope of every time now depends on us.

Our nation this generation will
lift a dark threat of violence
from our people and our future.
We will rally the world to
this cause by our efforts,
by our courage.
We will not tire,
we will not falter,
we will not fail. George Bush 9/20/2001

What the enemy believes
We are not fighting so
that you will offer us
something.
We are fighting
to eliminate you.
Hussein Massawi,
a former Hezbollah leader.

I'm working on the Strawmen all the live long day...can't you hear my arguments failing. The Captain goes astray....
UPDATE: Grevious error alert, I missed the fact that the Captain has a guest blogger posting right now. I missed this
alert. I am updating this post to reflect that fact though it is unclear where the Captain stands on this issue. I have clarified several sentences that were written late last night and were less than clear.

Alrighty then tit for tat is not very useful so I won't indulge myself in calling people names. Nor will I construct strawmen so as to mis-characterize the Dafydd arguments. His position is weak and its why he finds himself descending to the tactics of the left. Building strawmen in order to discredit arguments is as old a tactic as arguments themselves.

By Muslim Derangement Syndrome, I mean those Americans who advocate the murder of hundreds of thousands of Moslems, just to make an equally irrational point arising from their religious bigotry. I explicitly refer to all those who propose, demand, and practically salivate over "nuking Mecca."
Salivate over the possibility? I think not, the nature of our enemies has been very hard to pin down and its in the definition of our enemies that this argument revolves. Dafydd and a few other prominent "right of center" folks are such die hard fanatics of President Bush that they seem to buy his "Islam is the religion of Peace" argument completely. All this time I have been waiting to hear from the moderate Muslims that this 3 decade jihad against my country has all been a terrible mistake. So far not even those "Moderate Muslim Imams" in my country have been willing to unequivocally denounce such terror. As the years have gone by I have begun to believe them when they say they are at war with us. It is incumbent on Dafydd and his allies to show who these moderate Muslims are in this country and point us to their statements.

No one advocates the murder of millions of Moslems as a matter of course but as a retaliation for a strike that in the hypothetical has already killed perhaps hundreds of thousands of Americans. Now Dafydd wants us to believe that this is not a religious war, then offer proof. You want to convince us? Don't call us names show us where we have gone wrong with facts. Show us the thousands of Imams who have taken up arms against those who supposedly have perverted Islam so horribly. Dafydd says that this is not a war against Islam, but oddly enough we don't find Protestants sheltering these monsters who wish to murder 4 million of our children, we find only other muslims sheltering them. Odd for a religion of peace to shelter such monsters.

I am talking about you, sitting right there at your desk at work or home reading these words. Moslem Derangement Syndrome applies to anyone who sees the war on terrorism through an increasingly apocalyptic filter, where every attack, every statement, and eventually every turbin on TV becomes more evidence of Armageddon, Ragnarok, the final battle between Good and Evil.

This is a deadly metaphor. If this really is Armageddon, the Final Trump, the armies of righteousness versus the demons of darkness, then anything goes. Everybody is a target. There is no distinction between combatant and civilian, between terrorist and believer, or even between enemy Moslem and allied Moslem; the world becomes one monstrous "war of all against all," in which there not only are no neutrals, there are no innocents.

That some folks look forward to such a horrific conflagration with ill-disguised glee is no testament to the civilizing nature of Western society.

Oh now we are ignorant racists who view the turbins worn by another group of people who ironically have been even more persecuted by Islam as a threat? Hindu Kush was the act of a few fanatics?

Furthermore by trying to say that we view this as Armageddon is the Captain trying to employ another favorite tactic of the left, trying to say that anyone who is religious is ignorant? Have we gone so far into PC hell that this is the level of debate inside of the right?

No one I have read who has agreed with Tancredo's statements has been declaring this is the final battle between good and evil, or worse between the demons of darkness and the angels of light. But that Dafydd stoops so low to attack us says more about the weakness of his argument than it does about our views on what we face.

Rather than strike with eyes wide shut at all 1.3 billion Moslems in the world -- how to win friends and influence people! -- let us strike with open eyes at the actual ghouls themselves, the true enemies of civilization and humanity: the Ba'athists in Syria, the mullahs in Iran, the werewolves who rule from Pyongyang. Let us announce our plan: we strike any country that actually had a hand in the attack, along with every international terrorist group in the world, whether or not it was specifically involved: every Wahhabist terror cell, every spinoff from Hezbollah, every al-Qaeda affilliate. Even the IRA. Every militant group that does not disarm and sue for peace.
The idea that this war is about winning friends and influencing people is what has us wearing white gloves to handle Korans at Gitmo, its what has us bending over back-wards to appease the very fiends that want to murder us in the millions. Wars are not about winning friends and influencing people, they are about completely breaking the will of those who are attacking you. You crush their will to fight then you make friends with them. If a war is being fought to win friends and influence people then you had no business fighting it in the first place. Wars are fought when your village faces an existential threat. You don't waste the finest of your young people lives in brutal wars to make friends and influence people, you prayerfully send them out in front of the enemy to crush the enemy so that the children and old don't have to face them.

We face an existential threat from an enemy that has been attacking the west for over 1,400 years. Ok if we want to try and give them freedom and democracy to attempt the peaceful reformation of their brutal religion I am all for it. That tolerance will end if one of my cities goes up in smoke. At that point it may be a bibilical war only because only one side will come out of the other end. It may well be that our elites cannot handle that sort of war, it may well be that those who consider themselves advocates for the defense of this nation dont really have the stones to fight the way we have fought when our backs have been forced up against the wall. But there are a lot of those sorts of people around. And I would warn our enemies that you trifle with that side of our country at your ultimate peril. That part of the country is not sorry about Hiroshima or Nagasaki, when we weighed the balance between their side dying and ours dying we found it easy to pull the trigger. We have alot more triggers now, fuck with us and we will find you and everyone even remotely associated with you. When President Bush declared that you are either with us or with the enemy he was appeasing us, if he fails and one of our cities goes up in flames he will lose his job and someone serious about ridding the world of that cancer will get the job done.

Tancredo may have done the other side a favor by letting them know that there is a significant portion of this country that doesnt look at war as an intellectual exercise but as brutal horrible stuff that we don't intend to lose. It is horrible to misunderstand your enemy, Tancredo's statements should be looked at as a sort of wake up call to those moderate muslims to get control before its too late. He was letting them know not to underestimate us that might be the most important gift they have gotten in a long time.
