When conservatives ceded the arts to the left by funding their idiocy in the name of bipartisanship they planted the seeds of this memorial. Compromising with bad ideas seldom works out to the benefit of rational actors on the world stage. We thought it would be harmless to fund their little theater's, public television shows, and other knick knacks of the artistic homeless believing that it would simply shut them up and get them off our backs. Not realizing that we would be ceding the ability to control the way many events that end up being interpreted by the artistic community are represented to the public.
In short to expect that group to understand heroism, to approve of heroism and to agree that it should be displayed was like asking elephants to fly. They simply do not understand heroism. They simply do not agree that heroism has any place in today's society. Given a choice in a situation they would choose to sit passively waiting for someone else, a brute with whom they wouldn't share the time of day in better circumstances, to come and deal with the threat. Underlying their hatred and misunderstanding of heroism lies a basic cowardice that causes them to bitterly envy those who face their fears and overcome them.
Flight 93 exists in a universe that none of them can even approach. Those warriors stood up and said no farther. In the most horrifying circumstances they drew a line in the sand and said this far and no farther. They deserve such a heroic memorial as to put to shame those in Rome, Greece or Paris. Not wind chimes or a red crescent.
This certainly does not take condemn all of those in the community as some if not the majority are individually brave in terrifying circumstances. But I am attempting to understand why we can always count on the group to come up with wind chimes in the place of inspiring paeans to the bravery and heroism of our bravest whether it is in Shanksville or in NYC.
