- A Common Man Looks at the War on Islamic Terror -

Freedom and fear are at war.
The advance of human freedom the great achievement of
our time, and the great hope of every time now depends on us.

Our nation this generation will
lift a dark threat of violence
from our people and our future.
We will rally the world to
this cause by our efforts,
by our courage.
We will not tire,
we will not falter,
we will not fail. George Bush 9/20/2001

What the enemy believes
We are not fighting so
that you will offer us
something.
We are fighting
to eliminate you.
Hussein Massawi,
a former Hezbollah leader.

The joy of shooting beer cans
Finally got enough time to go shooting my brand new never been fired
Springfield GI-45 Stainless this past Sunday. Wow forgot how much fun .45's are to shoot. Satisfying enough thump when you pull the trigger and great big holes in stuff where they land. Fun stuff. Was pretty proud of the fact that I hadn't forgotten how my dad taught me to shoot. Didn't hit anything I didn't aim at which is saying alot after being away from shooting for 25 years.

Between the time I stopped shooting around 25 years ago and now I have managed to have to pull a weapon on a knucklehead. Gentleman told my friend, who opened the door at 1:00Am without asking who it was, that he was collecting for the United Way. Well he was until I pulled my shot gun out from underneath my couch. The unmistakable sound of a pump action chambering a round convinced him that the pickings might be a tad easier elsewhere.

What does that have to do with the .45? Well not much except that after Katrina having weapons around the house is a wise thing. Regardless of the spin New Orleans did indeed descend into chaos and suffering, the people who were armed were able to protect their stuff.

One has to be able and willing to protect your own family if push comes to shove. I had forgotten that having a weapon has already saved me from at least a robbery, naturally I was living in New Orleans when that happened. In one 3 month period in New Orleans after not experiencing any crime at all I was robbed at gunpoint, caught in a shoot out between police and robbers at a Time Saver and had to draw that shot gun. It is absolutely easy to see how New Orleans could descend into the chaos it descended into actually it would have been strange had it not. Anyways thats for another post.

Shot a Glock .45 and even though its a great gun am glad I picked up my 1911. Prefer the single action of my 1911 to the double action Glock. Not sure I could shoot it well if I were having to shoot very quickly. The 1911 on the otherhand is stable and easy to shoot fast and accurately.

Have to say that the Springfield Armory .45 Caliber shot perfectly. Shot two boxes of ammo, one box of some generic FMJ ammo that I don't remember the name of and a box of Winchester FMJ, nothing jammed and everytime I pulled the trigger something came out of the other end. Spent a very satisfying evening after everyone went to bed cleaning it. Sort of odd how much fun it is to clean a well made weapon. I suspect I am not alone in feeling that cleaning weapons is almost as much fun as firing them.
