The release of the information regarding our intelligence efforts in the war on terror are unforgivable. But when we, the blogsphere, fall into our old comfortable habits of blaming the media for publishing what was given to them by people inside the government, we do our country a disservice. It would be tragic indeed if we managed to muzzle the media since actually they are doing us a favor.
Many of you probably are outraged by the fact that I say the press is doing us a favor. But I consider the press as the canary in the coal mine, our first warning of traitors inside of the government willing to release our most secret tactics and strategies to our enemies.
This is aside from the questionable motives of many inside of the media. It is undeniable that much of the Mainstream press dislikes and disagrees with the President and because of that are actively using information to subvert and destroy his Presidency. This is not so different from the actions of the press throughout our history and I would be loath to stop it even though they are attacking a President I support.
The question isn't that the press is willing to use the information gotten from traitors with the highest clearances, the question becomes how did we allow that those traitors inside of our programs? Further and even more importantly where are our counter intelligence agents and why are those traitors still releasing information? Remember this has been going on for quite sometime, at what point did President Bush get pissed? When it was released to the public? Why didn't he know about it earlier and do something about it?
Our counter intelligence operations are supposed to safeguard our secrets by stopping the sort of releases that seem to occur every hour on the hour. If our counter intelligence operatives cannot identify and arrest persons who almost seem to be stationed inside of the New York Times and Washington Post then exactly how effective are they in guarding against those very same traitors releasing information to our enemies.
Furthermore the release of the information to the press may be a sort of killing two birds with one stone sort of operation. After all the terrorists certainly have the ability to read our papers. The traitors release the information to the press fully cognizant that the enemy will get the information from the same paper.
We have had traitors inside of our government since the formation of our country and it should come as no surprise that there remains those who wish this country ill. It has always been so and will always remain so. The product of their traitorous actions remains the loss of life of those who protect us all.

Our fight with the press should not revolve around the point that they release information ill gotten, since winning that battle would compromise our freedoms far too much. Our fight with the press must revolve around the portrayal of those traitors inside of the government as "Whistle-blowers". They are nothing of the sort. Though the Democrats seeking short term political gain will also encourage that portrayal, the truth is our enemies have gained a great deal of advantage from those traitors inside of our government.
Our attention must turn to our Counter Intelligence operations. We must ask a few questions.
1. Do we know who the leaker's are and if so have we allowed them to continue because of their sensitive positions such as Senator, former National Security Adviser so on?
2. If so then how important was the information if we are not willing to prosecute those responsible for releasing it?
3. If we do not know who the leaker's are then when do we get counter intelligence operations in this country that are effective enough to allows us to have confidence in all of our intelligence operations? Counter Intelligence operations are supposed to, besides finding traitors inside of our government who release information to the enemy, insure that we are not being deceived by enemies by being fed information that does not reflect reality. (Iraq WMD's anyone?). How can we be sure they are competent enough to accomplish this task if they are not competent enough to locate and secure someone leaking information to the New York Times?
We have a problem in this country but it is not focused on the press. We should be focused on those traitors inside of our government and our inability to do anything about it. That is the issue.

Thank you for the kind mention AJ. The article where I truly respond to the idea that the Press is the Center of all Evil is hereThe Press as the Center of All Evil…and other absurd notions
I find your trust in the Government policing up the leakers to be quaint in the face of the difficulties of exposing so many other problems in our government…Able Danger, CIA Incompetence etc etc.
Furthermore there seems to be an exemption if you are a Senator that is dangerous to our country. Senator Shelby for instance should have been prosecuted as well as Patrick Leahy. If anyone is above the law then the law does not exist.
Given the magnitude of the exposures and the almost casual attitude towards leaks by the Bush Administration it would seem that your faith in the government policing up its own is misplaced. When President Bush presumed that a Justice Department investigation was in the works I didn’t get a charge out of his cuteness I got upset by his casualness. Yea I know he is pissed but I want someone’s ass. Sandy Berger should have gone to jail. Anyone who leaks secrets should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law…that will take care of the problems with the media.
It is a very uneasy idea for me to want to put limits, even informal limits on the press. I prefer to use them as the Canary in the Coal mine to warn us when there are people inside of the Government who are willing to jeopardize this country for money or ideology.
