- A Common Man Looks at the War on Islamic Terror -

Freedom and fear are at war.
The advance of human freedom the great achievement of
our time, and the great hope of every time now depends on us.

Our nation this generation will
lift a dark threat of violence
from our people and our future.
We will rally the world to
this cause by our efforts,
by our courage.
We will not tire,
we will not falter,
we will not fail. George Bush 9/20/2001

What the enemy believes
We are not fighting so
that you will offer us
something.
We are fighting
to eliminate you.
Hussein Massawi,
a former Hezbollah leader.

For the want of a backbone, a world was lost...Mohammed Cartoons, Censorship and Islam
Michelle Malkin points to a story that gets my blood boiling due to the ridiculous nature of those who declare themselves moderates. Cowards, there is not another word in the dictionary that adequately describes such abject surrender in the face of Islamic confrontation. Those who advocate, shutting down websites that have published the cartoons, newspapers who have fired editors, Universities that have silenced students, have not saved anything. What they have done is condemn us all to a war, that none except the most lunatic want, a shooting war between Civilizations.

As long as we had a free press and an open mind we could hope to combat the Fundamentalists with ideas not bullets and bombs. We could win over the Jack Muslims (think
Jack Mormons) as long as we could keep talking to them about their religion. Now we have decided to begin the process of NOT offending the Fundamentalists and therefore have shown the Jack Muslims (think of Jack Mormons) that we cannot be trusted to defend them against the Fundamentalists since we won't even defend a right that we have sacrificed millions of lives to win. The free expression of our speech and press.

Without a free press and the freedom to criticize Islam we have absolutely no hope of forcing a change in a religion that so far will not bend to our culture. The culture of respecting the freedom of religion, the freedom of expression, the equal rights of women, the freedom of the press and the pursuit of happiness as defined by us not some pervert who made shit up as he went in the 7th Century. The Pope himself has indicated that given the nature of the Koran such change is impossible so indeed we musn't give an inch to those we are fighting for the minds of the moderates (Jack Muslims).

The press like lawyers are safety valves meant to relieve pressure in situations that were at one time settled with wars. When we silence the press we encourage the old ways to return. Unluckily for us, we have become a lot more efficient in war which means that a lot more of us will die as the result of the idiocy of silencing the press.

Naturally the "Moderates" will refuse any blame and instead claim that they were just trying to defuse the situation by respecting Islam. Perhaps not realizing or worse not caring that their quiet agreement that the cartoons were offensive gave signals to Authorities in question that it would be ok to silence those who believed Free Speech and a Free Press were important enough to test. Once those brave souls were silenced the only weapon the west had with a snowballs chance in hell of succeeding, disappeared. If we allow the Moderates to succeed in silencing our free speech and free press we will be left with only bullets and bombs to defend ourselves. The blood will be on the hands of those who thought it imprudent to upset anyone.

To imagine that we the United States of America will go quietly into the night is an exceptionally bad bet to make. Instead we, like Israel, will take a lot of folks down with us. And as always the blame for this war, as it has been for most wars, will be upon those who refused to see the world as it is, not as they wish it was. It would have been so much easier to talk people out of this rather than to make war on them. But without the rights of a free press and the rights of free expression that is hopeless. We are left to guns alone to make our points.
