Please follow these directions so I don't have to come to your house and strafe your dog. <VBG> News Flash I have just included these directions in the zip containing the timedemo bench. So you have NO EXCUSES...stupidity is not tolerated. Read the directions or suffer the wrath of my 30mm Cannon.

The method...

First you must give me a short concise description of your computer. Please no War and Peace Version's and conversely no, P2 300 V2 end of descriptions. Try using this template...to make it even easier for me please number a note and fill in the blanks without my description if you get what I mean. To save me cutting a pasting keep in this order if possible.

1. F4 Ver. 1.XX
2. 3D Card Used for the test....please dont list both if you have more than one. List the one relevant to the numbers you are sending. If you are sending numbers for both types (ie Voodoo and TNT) bless your heart drinks are on me when we meet, but please send both in separate zip files.  The Zip file contains a txt file describing your puter using this template and the fr_test1 and so on files.
3. CPU Type (ie Celeron, P-2, Xeon, AMD, Pentium P-5)
4. Bus speed and multiplier of CPU (ie 110 front side bus x 3.0 multiplier) = 330mhz
5. Amount of Ram
6. Type of Hardrive make and whether EIDE or SCSI
7. Windows Version
8. Soundcard

THEN go to these directions....hehehe. Who said having fun was easy.....
Right click your Desktop shortcut for Falcon 4...select properties. Your target line should look like this...

E:\Falcon4\falcon4.exe -log

Download this file PD's Time demo Oh My.tac and place it inside your campaign/save folder in Falcon 4.

The essential command is -log this generates the file we are looking for...set your autopilot in options to steer point. (We don't want hero's we want the same flight each time...). Start the sim.

Set these options exactly like this so that the results can be posted. I am not posting personal setting due to a lack of space...but hey if the demand is there maybe I can devote more space to it. Anyways I hope that the following helps.

  1. No clouds

  2. Canopy reflections on Both...(line and reflections)

  3. Only 2d cockpit...please do not move the views.

  4. Blackout turned off...I have created some sharp turns to force it to load textures if you blackout the frame-rate will shoot up.

  5. Autopilot set to steerpoint

  6. Vehicle magnification is always set to 1...this may make a large difference so don't forget.

  7. Set up your graphic options for this run. Please follow the guidelines below if you would like to post them here.

  8. Select Tactical Engagement then select saved. If you have put the mission file into the proper directory you will see it. Select it and select the Go Icon on the lower right...be prepared to immediately select it again. As the mission is on as soon as you reach the mission selection screen...ideally you shouldn't allow more than 4 seconds to pass before you hear the sound of the jet flying overhead.

  9. Now remain prepared to select autopilot as soon as you drop into the cockpit. Do not touch any setting once you are in the cockpit besides autopilot....don't switch the views especially. Then you have around 5 minutes to go to the head. Come back in time for that last way point...as soon as it goes under your nose...nother words the diamond disappears select escape and E at the same time. Yes this is a bit of slop...but its the best we have. I have been able to achieve repeatable results to within a few tenths so I think its good enough.

  10. Now after the end of the mission, please alt tab to minimize the Falcon Screen and go into explorer to the Falcon Directory dig down until you see the Falcon.exe file. In that same folder will be two files fr_summary.csv and framerate.csv at this time we are using the fr_summary.csv to analyze the performance of Falcon. If you intend to send me a file to post, please rename the file at this time to fr_test1 if you followed the graphic settings for column 1 of the below table, fr_test2 if you followed the guidelines for the 2nd column and so on so forth. This is really crucial as Im really getting some confusing file names and nothing to tell me which column's graphic settings are being tested. This will force me to not post those runs and thats a shame cause I know how long it takes to run this thing. Please name your files correctly.

  11. Now ideally if you want to show your computer off to its max benefit you should reboot and start Falcon up for the next test. You may choose to not do this and to instead run Memturbo or Freemem...you will find around a .5 to 1.5 frame slowdown from not rebooting.

Final note for the last column I tested the effects of a radical increase in the player bubble by enabling the -g2 command switch.
    Abreviations used TT=terrain texture, TD=Terrain Density, OD=Object Detail, ODN=Object Detail Density, PB=Player

Well how fast is it...

The Results of a AMD K6-2 333 Running both a 64mb PC-66 Ram 83x4 and running PC-100 Ram at 110x3. I have a dual Voodoo 2 setup. The numbers are derived from the fr-summary file generated with the -log command. I average the average column....and have published these numbers. I would love to hear from others with their numbers. Don't worry if you don't have Excel as I have the program...just zip up the fr-summary file and I can derive the numbers. Make sure to include your puter config. Email the whole shebang to me at
